Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan called out Radiohead in a recent interview with Antiquiet and rants about "the current culture of valuation," whatever that means.
I can’t think of any people outside of Weird Al Yankovic who have both embraced and pissed on Rock more than I have. Obviously there’s a level of reverence, but there’s also a level of intelligence to even know what to piss on. ‘Cause I’m not pissing on Rainbow. I’m not pissing on Deep Purple. But I’ll piss on fuckin’ Radiohead, because of all this pomposity. This value system that says [Radiohead guitarist] Jonny Greenwood is more valuable than [Deep Purple and Rainbow guitarist] Ritchie Blackmore. Not in the world I grew up in, buddy. Not in the world I grew up in.
So I find myself defending things. Is Ritchie Blackmore a better guitar player than me and Jonny Greenwood? Yes. Have we all made contributions? Yes. I’m not attacking that. I’m attacking the pomposity that says this is more valuable than that. I’m sick of that. I’m so fucking sick of it, and nobody seems to tire of it.
Some people complained Radiohead's pay-what-you-want distribution model for their 2007 album In Rainbows devalued music. Maybe that's what Corgan refers to as "the culture of valuation"? I have no idea. I do know that to announce the Smashing Pumpkins reunion in 2005 Corgan ran a full-page newspaper ad saying, "I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams". He probably shouldn't be calling other musicians pompous.
In the meantime, Smashing Pumpkins will release Oceania on Tuesday. The album-within-an-album - part of his ongoing 44-song Teargarden By Kaliedyscope project started in 2008 - is streaming on iTunes now.
Corgan also started a professional wrestling operation in his hometown of Chicago. Resistance Pro Wrestling may also have a reality show in the works. Gibson reports:
Yep, the guitar maestro is so into pro-wrestling he says he has now signed a deal with a “big reality show producer” who has “an incredible track record.”
According to ProWrestling.net, Corgan says, “We believe that wrestling is fascinating on many, many levels. Socially, politically, even economically. The struggles independent wrestlers go through to try to find work. Those are real struggles that anybody can identify with. We want to show what goes on in a wrestling company behind the scenes.
“I've had like nine or ten meetings so far about it. With different people. A lot of them wanted to know if this would be your typical manufactured reality show and I told them that with a wrestling company, you don't have to manufacture reality. There's plenty of it to go around.”
