We break down the Week 17 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals.
San Francisco 49ers
Tight end Vernon Davis was targeted three times against the Atlanta Falcons last week and didn't catch a pass. He had scored in five straight games prior to Week 16. Despite his surprising zero points last week, he'll be a sure bet to get on the board this week. Not only is he one of the best tight ends in the game, the Cardinals happen to have the worst fantasy defense in the when it comes to defending the tight end position.
On the ground, Frank Gore will handle the work for the 49ers. Gore rushed 21 times for 97 yards and a touchdown last week after being shut out of the end zone in the previous two games. The 49ers still have seeding to play for, so fantasy owners can bet Gore will be busy against the Cardinals.
The Cardinals beat the Seattle Seahawks on the road last week, something that hasn't been done in well over a year. It was no thanks to Carson Palmer who threw four interceptions and played one of his worst games of the season. He'll need to be better against the 49ers as the Cards still need to win and help to make the playoffs. He might be a good bounce-back candidate in fantasy terms because of that sense of urgency.
Palmer will have to work his way through tough coverage to find Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald leads the team in touchdowns with 10, but he's been held in check the last two weeks. He only caught three passes for 18 yards against the Seahawks but that was largely due to tight coverage and shaky quarterback play. Fitz needs to start in your fantasy finale.
